Do a thorough literature review: Depending on your topic, search the scholarly sources for: the history/development/creation of the technique/strategy/model, the purpose of the technique/strategy/model, the process, the population the technique/strategy/model was designed for, who the technique/strategy/model/ is not recommended for, the effectiveness of the technique/strategy/model, what compromises the effectiveness, suggestions for use of the strategy/model in your counseling specialty (clinical mental health, school, couples and families), and a description of any additional training/credentialing beyond the master’s degree and license necessary to use this technique/strategy/model. Because this is an Integrative assignment, find resources that discuss, inform, or support your ideas of howthe technique/strategy/model fits within aChristian counseling perspective.
Think through each scholar’s perspective. Compare and contrast different perspectives on your topic. Shift through the irrelevancies to get at the main issues of your topic. Analyze the information that you have gathered. Then synthesize and summarize all the information you have gathered into an essay that will educate and inform the reader about the topic. Blend your resources and the information you have gathered so that it flows together. Show how the topic fits into the broader context of counseling. High marks go to papers deriving intelligent generalizations from accurate and appropriate facts. Note the combination. Description along is dull and pointless. Generalizations without supporting evidence are worthless. Share your opinion and/or new perspective about the topic in your summary (without using first- person).
Draw on a variety of sources making sure you include resources from the counseling profession. If you are concerned about your research skills, take advantage of the Research Assistants at the university library. They are a valuable resource for students.
