Bowie State University was established after the Civil War in 1865 during a period of significant social unrest in the United States. Newly freed slaves were seeking an opportunity to gain a formal education and make a meaningful contribution to society. However, legal and social barriers impeded their progress along the way. Reflect on the social and political climate in the country just after the civil war. Discuss at least two barriers newly freed slaves faced during that time. Using the “Evolution of a University” libguide and history of Bowie State University video as a reference, name at least two contributions Bowie State University made toward meeting the educational needs of freed slaves.
