  1. What are some of the important reasons for studying communication since we’ve learned that communication is not common sense?
  2. Communication is a transactional according to the synergistic model/process.  Explain this concept and provide specific examples.
  3. What is attribution error?  Provide examples for components of this theory.  How is this related to ethical communication and emotional intelligence? 
  4. Two people can perceive an event, person, history or an incident in very different ways.  Using concepts from Chapters 3 & 4, what are the reasons for such different perceptual realities?   You can also refer to the slides we viewed together in class.
  5. What is the difference between denotative and connotative definitions of words and language?  Why is this distinction important?  Why do the differences matter?  Provide specific examples for each definition.
  6. Nonverbal communication can be both complementary and contradictory.  Explain and provide specific examples to illustrate these examples.
  7. Describe some of the main points by Tatum in “The complexity of identity:  who am I?”. Apply these main points to aspects of Chs. 3 & 4.  Tatum states that we can be both privileged and disadvantaged at the same time.  What does she mean by this and why is it important on a multicultural campus such as NVCC?
  8. Using terms from Chs. 3, 4 or 8, what major lessons did you gain from participating in the Creating Community workshop and how it relates to the importance of studying communication, identity, and effective intercultural communication?
  9. List and describe the ethical considerations of trigger words.  Given how we moved through these challenges in class, what are some communication strategies you might use to move forward and/or find common ground?
  10. List and describe three barriers to effective listening.  Provide specific examples and how to overcome those barriers.
