Cultural intelligence is “the capability to function effectively across rational, ethnic, and organizational cultures.” [1] Cultural understanding is important when talking to people of different cultures about the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is very important to not come across as disrespectful. Taking the time to learn about other beliefs and values will show the person that you have respect for what they believe. When they see that you took the time to learn about them they make take the time to listen to what you have to say. Learning to talk to people of other cultures may mean that we have to leave our comfort zone of only talking to people with beliefs and values c;lose to our own. We must go into spreading the gospel with an ethical, spiritual, and intellectual awareness to the people we are seeking to reach. The Holy Spirit will lead us with the right words when witnessing to others. “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto the uttermost part of the earth.” [2]
In the Bible there are many places where Jesus demonstrated the significance of cross cultural understanding. These examples show us that God’s love reaches beyond any cultural differences, and that His love has no boundaries. In the Gospel of Matthew Jesus and his disciples encounter a woman in the land of Canaan. The Jews did not interact with Canaanites. The disciples ask Jesus to send her away. Instead of turning her away Jesus healed her daughter. This example should be a powerful message to us all. Everyone can receive all that Jesus has to offer. We must bring the truth of the gospel into every cultural that we encounter. “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the Holy Ghost.” [3]

What is so important about cultural understanding within the context of gospel proclamation?
“Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interest, but take an interest in others, too.” (Philippians 2: 3-4 NLT) Culture understanding is something that we as a society tend to over think. Every culture is based on some form of respect and humbleness and the gospel preaches to love everyone. “Our tendency to look for similarities and our tendency to apply an isolated event or trait to entire culture.” Livermore (2013) Having a culture understanding is to know the people in which you are communicating first. Most believe having to speak a certain language to contribute in spreading the word of God, but the gospel is one language and that is God’s language. Knowing how to express the love of God and how the gospel effects your daily life sometimes can be enough to break the barrier.
Jesus demonstrates the significance of cross-cultural understanding in several scriptures. His way was sensitive, but direct while questioning someone’s way of life. He often asked questions of people to make them question their own beliefs, and he did it without them shutting down or ridiculing them. One of the many great examples Jesus left for us is the Samaritan woman by showing us how Jesus communicated. “Jesus replied, if you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.” (John 4:10 NLT) Know that Samaritans and Jews did not speak he still found a way to show her the gospel of eternal life. Further down in scripture talks about how many husbands she had and that she would be forgiven if she’d just ask. Even after the scriptures how did Jesus communicate with so many cultures and have positive results? “If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love other, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.” (1 Corinthians 13:1 NLT) Jesus loved, this is the way we will reach other cultures. Showing a love and compassion the way Jesus does will open the hearts of the cultures se come in contact with. Once hearts are opened then the gospel will do the rest.
