For this assignment, you are asked to choose one of three topics involving the analysis and comparison of two podcasts, two cinema studies website, or two public radio shows.
The paper should be structured as follows:
1. Statement of the topic 2. Analysis: discovering and focusing on significant patterns that emerge from the listening to the podcasts or the radio shows, or studying the cinema websites 3. Interpretation: Asking and answering questions about your observations and findings 4. Evaluation: Arriving at judgments resulting from the first three stages
Your three choices are:
A. Podcasts Choose two of the following podcasts: “The Argument”, from the New York Times; “Radio Atlantic”, from Atlantic magazine; and “Commentary”, from Commentary magazine. You will have to locate these podcasts, doing a Google search, and listen to three episodes of each one. Your paper should describe the type and structure of the podcasts – length, hosts, organization of the chat, topics discussed, political viewpoint, and everything you consider relevant. The final page of the paper is a comparison of both podcasts, with your opinion about them.
B. Cinema websites Choose two of the following websites: “Film Art” (davidbordwell.net); “Cinephilia and Beyond (cinephiliabeyond.org); and “Senses of Cinema” (sensesofcinema.com). After studying the websites, describe how they are organized, what types of articles and authors they feature, everything that catches your attention. Read three articles or blogs from each, to illustrate your points. After accomplishing this for each one, compare and contrast these websites, commenting on their merits and usefulness.
C. Listen to three episodes of two of these National Public Radio shows: “Fresh Air”, “All Things Considered”, and “Press Play”. You can locate them via a Google search. Once you have listened to them, write a short description of the shows: type, frequency, structure, length, topics addressed, and everything that catches your attention. You will illustrate your description of each show with examples from the episodes you have listened. Your final paragraph will be your opinion of these radio shows.
If you use any bibliography to give an overall view of the podcasts, radios shows or cinema studies websites, list your sources at the end, in the MLA format 8th edition.
