(Don’t use names) Have you ever had to deal with an unethical boss or colleague? What did you do/would you do if you were in this situation? How can you safeguard yourself in the future from an unethical boss, peer, company?

At my retail job for three years, a family owned business, there were two unethical bosses/owners. The mom of the family would talk bad about employees to customers that would come in to buy items. Also, if she was unhappy with what someone was doing she should talk about it with another employee nearby. Overall she hated everything, nothing was good enough for her, and in my opinion does not know how to have fun at work. The son of the family business, was also a handful. He did not know how to confront employees when they made a mistake and control his anger in front of others. There were two bosses (not owners) than ran the main floor that I liked very much and were more ethically behaved. I avoided the mom and son and minded my own business. I had small talk with them, but mainly spoke with the bosses that I liked. Also, I would talk to my co workers what they thought of them, too.
When it comes to an unethical boss, there many things we can do safeguard ourselves. Here are some examples… First, ask questions. If you are unaware of what the boss is trying to show or accomplish for your duties let them know you appreciate them, but then bring up the situations where there is confusion. If this doesn’t help or if more comfortable, go to HR and their skills will help you through the process. If a bigger problem is involved such as legal issues that could affect the entire company, it’s best to contact the supervisors boss.

I have worked with an unethical colleague at a photography studio. She was stealing money out of our register so some reason that was never told to me. I have only worked with her a handful of times and she was not the best co-worker. She did try thou when she was “having a good day”. When I did work with her, my manger had told me to triple check every transaction she did and if it was possible just have me handle the money. Which is rather hard during peak business hours. However, I was able to keep my manager informed about what she did after every shift we worked together and my other co-workers did the same when they worked with her. One thing that I always did when I was working with her was to make sure iIstrictly stayed to our customer service procedure we had in pace to try and set a good example for her so she could change her ways. Unfortunately that didn’t happen and she actually ended up getting arrested when I was working with her.
