After reading the lessons for this week. I was inclined to read more on Intellectual properties, because of the type of classes I teach.
Van Dusen, 2013 stated that:
Intellectual properties are products of the human intellect that are unique, new and innovative, have some value in the marketplace, and are the creation of a single person or a team. Intellectual property can be an idea, an invention, a patented work, an expression or literary creation, a copyrighted work, a trademark, an industrial process, a composition of matter, a medicinal formulation, a computer program, a presentation, or data of digital magnetic origin (p.1).
We use a lot of images, so I have to teach my students lessons on copyrights, and trademarks. To make sure they have a clear understanding, I give several assignments before moving forward. I have a lot of students that are creative, so they draw their own images that they need on the computer. “Today’s students are not only consumers of information; technology has increased opportunities to create and publish independently(Seroff, 2015).
Plagiarism is now a burning issue in the education, industry, and research community (Spafford, 2011). When my students use another person’s work, they give them credit. Before, it wasn’t a big thing, but sense I am more educated about the matter, there will be a change. Going forward, if they use someone else’s work without citing them, they will not be given credit. Currently, my Image Editing class is creating posters, and they are not able to use another person’s work. To them this is the hardest task ever, because they are accustomed to using other people’s work and getting credit.
