Directions
In each unit, your are required to respond to discussion question based on the unit topics. You are required to post a minimum of three posts in the Unit Discussion. You must post on at least 2 different days during the unit.
- Initial Post – Post a response to ONE of the posted discussion questions (250-300 words)by Thursday 11:59 pm CT. Your initial posting should incorporate and refer to concepts/ideas found in your unit readings as well as personal examples and illustrations.
- Response Posts – Post TWO responses to peer postings that respond to ideas and submission of your classmates (100 -150 words each) by Sunday 11:59 pm CT. Your peer responses need to go beyond agreement with your classmate. Each peer response should contain personal examples, applications, or additional information that promotes further discussion. Specific examples and applications receive more credit than generalized/vague statements.
Notes:
- In order to receive full credit and give your classmates the opportunity to respond to your posting must be posted on time. Original postings that are posted after Thursday 11:59 pm CT will incur a 5-point late penalty.
- There is also a 5-point penalty for failure to post responses on at least two different days.
- Please address classmates by their names in your postings to avoid confusion that sometimes happens with replies.
Discussion Topic
- According to Alarid, what is the primary purpose of community corrections? Of the various community corrections goals, which one do you believe to be the most important and why? Which is used least and why?
- Based on what you’ve read in chapter one of Alarid, if you were a judge, would you prefer determinate or indeterminate sentencing? Why? Which would you prefer if you were convicted of a crime? Why? What if you were a legislator? How would you balance determinate sentencing with the desire to keep the tax burden low?
- In chapter one, Alarid discusses something called The Paradox. Explain the paradox in your own words. What is the danger of using public opinion and politics to determine correctional policy? What is the danger of using cost to determine correctional policy? What do you feel should drive correctional policy? Why?
- What are Risk/Need/Responsivity (Links to an external site.) and the Participation Process Model (Links to an external site.)? How does each work to address community corrections goals? What do you believe to be the most important factor in the success of each?
- Suppose your position requires that you evaluate the effectiveness of a local community corrections program. Describe how you would go about determining its effectiveness using evidence-based practices and why you chose the specific procedures/actions you would follow.
