Directions

In each unit, your are required to respond to discussion question based on the unit topics. You are required to post a minimum of three posts in the Unit Discussion. You must post on at least 2 different days during the unit.

Initial Post – Post a response to ONE of the posted discussion questions (250-300 words)by Thursday 11:59 pm CT. Your initial posting should incorporate and refer to concepts/ideas found in your unit readings as well as personal examples and illustrations.
Response Posts – Post TWO responses to peer postings that respond to ideas and submission of your classmates (100 -150 words each) by Sunday 11:59 pm CT. Your peer responses need to go beyond agreement with your classmate. Each peer response should contain personal examples, applications, or additional information that promotes further discussion. Specific examples and applications receive more credit than generalized/vague statements.

Notes:

In order to receive full credit and give your classmates the opportunity to respond to your posting must be posted on time. Original postings that are posted after Thursday 11:59 pm CT will incur a 5-point late penalty.
There is also a 5-point penalty for failure to post responses on at least two different days.

Chapter 4 Discussion

What is the purpose of pretrial services, and how do those working in this agency perform their job? What type of offender do you feel is most suited for pretrial release? Support your opinion. The text notes a trend toward an increase in pretrial detention. How does this conflict with the idea of â€œthe least restrictive option”? Which of the explanations offered by the text for the increase in pretrial supervision do you feel is the most likely reason for this increase? Why?
What should be the purpose of sentencing for first time offenders? What about repeat offenders? Is it more important that sentences be consistent across the board for all offenders of a similar class of crimes or that the sentences be adapted to the characteristics and needs of the offender? Support your point of view with information from your text, outside readings, and evidence-based research.
Read through the two case studies presented on page 83. The cases assume a judge has granted probation. Discuss which probation conditions would be appropriate and an appropriate length for the term of probation supervision. Then argue for or against the proposition that probation conditions should be left solely to the discretion of judges and should not be prescribed by law. Support all your conclusions with information from the text, outside readings and evidence-based research.

Chapter 5 Discussion

Discuss the use of various risk prediction scales. How might risk assessment best be used in community supervision? Choose one of the clients profiled on pages 115-116 and complete the four steps listed there using the Risks and Needs Classification Instrument (Figure 5.1 on pages 95-98). In explaining your assessment of the client and developing a case plan, explain how assessing client needs in education, employment, treatment, and so on help to develop the program plan. How much should a client be expected to do while on supervision?
Locate an online example of a jurisdiction that embraces the eight principles of effective supervision. Research the program and evaluate it in terms of how well you believe it meets the eight principles. Which of the principles of effective correctional intervention do you think are the most important? Why? Support your viewpoint with information from the text, outside readings, and evidence-based research.
Discuss the concept of caseload and workload computation. Why might workload be a better method of allocating probation or parole officer resources? How does a specialized caseload differ from a traditional caseload? What is intensive supervision and how does it differ from traditional supervision? Locate an online example of a program that utilizes intensive supervision. Describe the program in your own words. Include information on case load/work load and evaluation of effectiveness of the program if the information is available.
