1. When you first meet Grace, Maya and Joaquin what are your impressions of them? How are their lives different? How are they the same? Start by answering the first three questions. After that consider and discussion: If all three of them had the same set of parents/foster-parents, how do you believe that their lives would be different? Consider the scenario for each set of parents.
2. Consider the different ways boys and girls are affected by teen pregnancy. How are the lives of Grace and Max different here? Take examples from Grace’s chapters and discuss the different ways that they are treated by parents, peers and their school. Is one “blamed” for the pregnancy? Explain how so. How does Max’s father perceive of Grace? How does this affect their relationship? Explain. Is Max’s father right in his assertions? Explain how his treatment of Grace is one example of how we negatively treat teenaged girls who are/get pregnant.
