PSY 361: How to write a methods section (basics)
Your assignment is to write a method section for a propose future study, so you would write in the future tense and estimate what you might expect (or aim for) the demographics statistics (etc) to be.]
Method
Participants
Write out how many participants you expect or aim to recruit, who they will be, with gender, age (and age range) and ethnicity breakdown. How will they be compensated, and how much money (or SONA credits if students).
Design
Write out the design of the experiment or study. Is it experimental, if so is it within subjects or between subjects, how many groups are there, what are the groups and what is the manipulation, etc. Is it correlational or longitudinal, if so specify that and give very brief description of the variables (you will elaborate more below).
Materials
Manipulation. In this section, detail any experimental groups. Explain the way the IV will be manipulated (or not) in each group, with one or two example items (in the rare case of giving examples of instrument items, you are allowed to use quotations and copy and paste the exact wording of the items).
Manipulation Check: Measure of the IV. In this section describe the question items used to measure the IV. Give one or two items as examples. Also, if this is a standardized scale, search for a psychometrics paper on the measure (cite that paper) and give reliability (i.e., the Cronbach’s alpha) and validity statistics of this measure (just one or two sentences).
Measure of the Dependent Variable. In this section describe the items used to measure the dependent variable. Give one or two items as examples. Also give the internal reliability of this measure (i.e., the Cronbach’s alpha). Also, if this is a standardized scale, search for a psychometrics paper on the measure (cite that paper) and give reliability (i.e., the Cronbach’s alpha) and validity statistics of this measure (just one or two sentences).
Procedure
In this section describe the procedure from beginning to end, noting the consent form (online or on paper?), the manipulation, the measures, and the debriefing sheet. Note down where and how the participants will participate (e.g., on paper, or computer, in lab or on line, etc). Note the average or median time you expect the study to take.
Planned Statistical Analysis
Write out how you plan to analysis the data, including the type of statistical test you will use.
