email introduction assignment
There are two goals to this assignment: examine how you would present yourself to someone you haven’t worked with and assess your email writing skills.
This assignment is hypothetical and your invitation will not need to be formally sent, however some students choose to follow through and reach out. Contact a person at your current place of work or someone you wish to collaborate with that you found on LinkedIn. In the email, ask for an informational interview or a meeting to discuss mutual interests. For this exercise, you have never met this person before.
Research has shown that many professionals receive over one hundred work emails a day. How will you cut through the clutter of all those emails? How will you stand out? How will you build a connection and present yourself professionally?
In the email, address the following:
- Introduce yourself
- Give context on the purpose of your writing
- Relate to them on a personal or professional level
- Find a point of similarity between you and the intended audience
- Set a meeting by offering some logical information (i.e. modality, location, dates you are interested in meeting, time you would need)
Requirements:
In no more than one page write an email introducing yourself to fellow professional either on the colleague or executive level. The email should be at least 4 paragraphs.
– The page should be formatted like an email complete with the recipients email address, subject heading, greeting, purpose and signature.
This email will be assessed on the following criteria:
- Email formalities and layout
- Audience focus
- Email context and presentation of self
- Writing ability
