Episodic illnesses are sickness’ that are described by good health in patients with prolonged periods of illness between them. These diseases mostly cover the chronic illness category of medicine.
Diabetes Mellitus is a type of an episodic illness that a patient suffers high blood sugar levels over an extended period. Diabetes is initiated by lack of provision of enough insulin by the pancreas or the cells in a person’s body not responding well to the insulin produced in breaking down of these sugars to regulate them (Alberti & Zimmet, 1998). There are three types of this illness, type 1 diabetes in which the pancreas stops producing enough insulin. Type 2 in which the body develops a resistance to insulin and gestational diabetes which are experienced by pregnant women who do not have a history of suffering from the illness. When left untreated, this illness can lead to strokes, heart disease, kidney failure, comas, and blindness.

A change in lifestyle choices
Diabetes control often involves the abandonment of societal norms of socializing such as drinking and smoking cigarettes. These changes help in the maintenance of a healthier homeostatic system without toxins.

These changes involve the introduction of a proper and balanced diet to the patient. This diet comprises of eating of whole grains such as bread and pasta, adequate vegetables and fruits and eating a moderate amount of processed fats found in oils and margarine.
Introduction of Self-Care Practices
These self-care practices include watching of weight and maintenance of a normal body weight according to a person’s Basic Metabolic Index (BMI) (Alberti & Zimmet, 1998). Proper foot care techniques, learning to administer insulin injections and how to recognize symptoms of low blood sugar.
Regular Check Ups
These regular checkups are initiated to facilitate the proper regulation of medicines by qualified physicians.
