What is the main conflict in Jackson’s narrative, “The Lottery?” How do the members of the community work to overcome this issue? What else could these people do to make life better for themselves? Use evidence from the story to support your answer.
This first paper had quotes from Voth which I did not need, as well as the professor describing it as being just a summary without the questions being answered and too long. Attached The Lottery Essay is an example provided on how the papers should look according to the professor.

Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” is great fiction because of the mood the use of suspense creates in the story. What are these feelings? and how do they work to formulate the major themes in this piece? Use evidence from the poem to support your answer.
This paper was described as a summary as well with the answers not being answered as in the first assignment.

The main conflict in Jackson’s narrative, “The Lottery” is that a community is unable to rid itself of a horrible and unnecessary tradition because it is afraid of change. The townspeople continue to hold its annual lottery which involves the sacrificing of a person from the village, as they believe that this will ensure another year of their prosperity. This is shown when Old Man Warner, a respected elder of the community, ridicules those people from other towns who have retired this tradition. He says, “‘Pack of crazy fools… nothing is good enough for them. Next thing you know, they’ll be wanting to go back to living in caves… Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon.’” By railing against those people who have stopped conducting the lottery, Warner demonstrates his town’s belief that holding to the traditions, especially the lottery, is essential to ensuring the village survives the coming year. They do not understand that sacrificing one of their own will do nothing to change the fate of their community, and cannot see how anyone would be so careless as to depart from this ritual. But, those who have discontinued the lottery realize that it is ridiculous to believe that killing one of their own will ensure a good harvest.
It seems that these people could do other things to better ensure their prosperity. Since they are so concerned about their crop yields, they could send members of their community to land –grant colleges to study agriculture. These individuals could learn the latest farming techniques, return home and teach others in the community these things. They could also invest money in buying better equipment and improving the town’s infrastructure. Public works projects like dams and reservoirs would make irrigation more efficient and protect their crops during a drought. They could also encourage community members to stay current in their reading of agricultural literature, as knowledge is the real key to prosperity.
