Please upload your case scenario via the assignment manager.
Your paper should be framed in terms of the Bailey & Burch Seven-Step Model which is covered starting with page 35 in your textbook. You should have seven headings only in your paper: one heading for each of the seven steps in the Bailey & Burch model. Please do not use subheadings. As you will see below, the breakdown of points aligns with the framework of the Bailey & Burch model. Therefore, points will be deducted if your response does not follow this framework. Please see my in-depth guide as to how to complete each section in the document that accompanies this one.
This is the Case Scenario!!!
Here is the scenario:
After working as a school psychologist for ten years, you make a career change to take advantage of your Board certification which you have held for four years. You are thrilled to be hired as a BCBA by Beyond Reproach Behavioral Services, a new business. After working there for two months, the director approaches you and says that she is going to assign you to work with schools as this is an area where they can grow their business, which is having a hard time getting clients. She says that she hopes to take advantage of your background in education and tells you that she is counting on you to do a good job as the future of the business will depend on being able to get more clients and working with schools is the easiest way to do this. She states that she had a very difficult time obtaining the contract with the district and that it is important to make them happy. Your first client is a child named Emmanuel. Emmanuel is being referred for both academic and behavioral struggles (mainly failing grades and refusing to comply with teacher requests). The principal of the school says that he understands your role to be a behavioral expert to help the treatment team determine how to improve his behavior. You meet with the other team members to introduce yourself and begin to discuss the problems that Emmanuel is exhibiting. After a month of working with Emmanuel, the treatment team sits down to discuss his progress. When deciding on what to do in regards to the behavioral aspect of this case, the other treatment team members decide on a positive behavior support plan without seeking your input. You think to yourself, “They didn’t let me discuss my data. Oh, well, my data supports their decision and this is about Emmanuel not me. I can help them devise and carry out the planâ€. When addressing what to do with the academic aspect of this case, the team decides to begin the process of an expedited special education referral, also without your input. However, you have data that indicates that Emmanuel has not been engaged during academic tasks and you think to yourself, “If Emmanuel is not paying attention and not attempting to complete any of his work, of course he won’t be getting good grades. We need to determine the function of the behavior, evaluate his current skill level, and examine environmental variables affecting performance.†You explain to the group that your find their recommendation for a special education evaluation premature and try to persuade the team to commit to trying to increase his engagement and work completion before recommending a special education referral. The principal responds by saying, “Thank you very much for your input, I’m sure you will be able to help us improve his behavior, but our teachers have a great deal of experience working with students who are failing and know when a student could benefit from special education. We will be happy to work on engagement while Emmanuel is receiving special education services with our special education professionals. He will get more help in a pull-out classroom and his classes will benefit from being free of his frequent disruptions. In addition, we can use an exemption so that he will not have to be assessed on the state exam. The state also provides funding for each child with a disability which we can use to help all students. I want to thank you for your time and effort working with us, but this decision is in the best interest of Emmanuel and the school as a whole.†Please evaluate this situation using Bailey & Burch’s Seven-Step Model.
Helpful hints
• You do not have to worry about the McNamara article from the previous case scenario. That was one way of evaluating an ethical dilemma, this paper will look at Bailey & Burch’s model, although you will see a number of similarities in the two approaches.
• Please re-read the Bailey & Burch model before beginning the assignment and consult the text as you are writing your case scenario.
• Seeing as how the ability to convey your point(s) in a concise fashion is a highly valuable skill, please adhere to the 4 page length restriction. You’ll lose points if your paper is well overthis length.
• As with the first scenario, please make sure you are not spending too much time restating all of the information presented to you in the scenario. You will obviously need to refer to the information for your answer to make sense in context, but try to get directly to your points.
• Mind your APA style.
Step 1: Is the Incident Covered by the Ethics Code
Your paper should have 7 section headings. These headings, which I have included in this outline, come straight from the Bailey & Burch model that was covered earlier in the semester and starts on page 35 of the textbook. In order to adhere to APA formatting guidelines, your headings should be centered, boldface, and use upper and lowercase letters.
Section 1 of your paper should correspond directly with step 1 of Bailey & Burch’s model. In this section, you should identify if the possible ethical dilemma is covered by the Code. If so, you will want to state the specific Code standards that are relevant. This section will be worth three points which will be awarded for identification of appropriate Code standards.
Step 2: The Players
Section 2 of your paper should correspond directly with step 2 of Bailey & Burch’s model. In this section, you should identify all of the relevant players involved in the situation that has been identified as ethically problematic. As part of the step, you should evaluate if you believe you have the skills to handle this situation independently. This section is worth a total of threepoints. Three points will be awarded if at least three parties are identified. One point will be deducted for each party not identified under the minimum necessary of three.
Step 3: Contingency Plans for Ethics: Plan A, Plan B, Plan C
Section 3 of your paper should correspond directly with step 3 of Bailey & Burch’s model. In this section, you must identify three possible plans for handling the situation. You should rank the plans in order based on how effective you think they can be in resolving the situation and how intrusive these would be. This section is worth a total of three points. You will be awarded one point for each plan. You do not need to get incredibly detailed with each plan. You can see examples of plans in the text that are one or two sentences.
Step 4: The Skills and Clout
Section 4 of your paper should correspond directly with step 4 of Bailey & Burch’s model. In this section, you should evaluate what whether you have the skills (examples are listed on page 41 if the text) and clout (influence, power, authority) to enact your plans. This section is worth a total of three points. You will receive one point for each plan evaluation.
Step 5: The Risk to Client, Others, and Behavior Analyst
Section 5 of your paper should correspond directly with step 5 of Bailey & Burch’s model. In this section, you should evaluate potential harm in each of the three plans you came up with in step 3 for you, the client, and any other parties involved. This section is worth a total of three points. You will receive one point for addressing potential harm for each plan.
Step 6: Implementation
Section 6 of your paper should correspond directly with step 6 of Bailey & Burch’s model. In this section, you should, based on the examination of skills and clout in step 4 and possible risk to parties in step 5, select which plan you would try first, second, and third. The order can be different than what you first came up with in step 3. You do not have to write out the details of each plan. You can just refer to their original letter (A,B,C) in step three. This section is worth a total of three points. You will receive one point for listing each plan. If you were to come up with a new plan, based on steps 4 and 5, you can list it here.
Step 7: Evaluation
Section 7 of your paper should correspond directly with step 7 of Bailey & Burch’s model. In this section, you should list a way(s) as to how you might evaluate the outcome. This section is worth a total of two points.
Other
Two points will be dedicated to following APA style and overall presentation (spelling, grammar, punctuation, neatness). Please make sure to review and edit your papers before final submission.
References
Here you must list all of the references you use (which should be no more than Bailey & Burch) in APA format. PLEASE REMEMBER that according to APA formatting guidelines, references should be formatted in this “hanging indent†style and be double spaced.
A few more hints:
• Please limit (i.e., don’t use!) direct quotations from your references.
• Your paper should not be filled with references.
• Do not attempt to make your paper longer by manipulating the margins or spacing.
• Concise writing is a valuable skill. Limit your paper to 4pages (not counting any title pages or the reference page).
• Please do not copy the case scenario into your paper.
• Please submit your assignment through the assignment manager in blackboard (same that you use for the weekly written assignment). Do not copy and paste your paper into the “add comments†box in the assignment paper.
• Late submissions are penalized one point a day.
