expository essay about city development
An important aspect of urban development is that it happens “on top of” existing development. Rarely does development happen on a clean slate. As such, it is important to understand how events and processes from the past inform current developments.
To explore this idea, you will write an expository essay in which you examine some topic of American urban development in terms of how it is related to events or processes that happened in American cities prior to 1920 (the year we are considering to be the end of the Industrial Era). So you might compare/contrastsomething that is happening now, with something that happened in this earlier period of urban development. Are the processes/events the same? Different? How so? You might demonstrate how the current process/event is influenced by or dependent upon processes/events in the earlier period. You might show how the current process/event would not have been possible in the earlier time period and explain why not. Be creative in finding connections between the present and the past.
