Choose an album/recording of a musician or band that has been recorded in the last 10 years. Let me know what album you would like to write about before completing this assignment. I want everyone in the class to choose a different recording/album.
Listen to the entire album and write a response paper discussing its musical characteristics, as well as your opinion of the music. The paper should include an outline and description of the form of at least one of the songs from the album, using the terms in pg. 20 of the textbook (verse (A), chorus (B), bridge (C), interlude, intro, outro, etc.). Be specific. As an example, a typical form might look like this:
Intro, Verse 1 (A1), Verse 2 (A2), Chorus (B), Verse 3 (A3), Guitar Solo (Verse A4), Chorus (B), Outro
Some questions you may consider writing about:
Is there a melody? Is it memorable? Describe it. What is its shape?
Are there lyrics? What is the meaning of them/message of the song(s)? What is the music’s social context?
What instruments are used?
What is the role of each instrument?
How are dynamics, texture, rhythm, tempo, orchestration, harmony, consonance, dissonance, etc. used?
Is there improvisation in the music?
Does the music fit easily into a “genre”? What influences do you hear in the music?
What is the background of the musician(s) performing?
Is the music popular? Why/Why not? Who decides what music is “popular”?
This paper should be 3-4 pages, double spaced in length, and size 12 Times New Roman Font. Make sure to properly cite any sources.
You may choose any rap album.
EX. Travis Scott, Chance The Rapper, Drake, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Yatchy, Vic Mensa or Chief Keef.
