Please Answer 2 of the 4 questions in essay format.

  1. Some critics see Mrs. Mallard in “Story of an Hour” (15) as justified in her feelings. Other critics see her as selfish and self-centered. Choose a side and explain you position using excerpts from the story.
  1. “Young Goodman Brown” (249) is an allegory. Allegories always have an obvious theme or themes. What is or are the themes in “Young Goodman Brown?” Explain you position using excerpts from the story.
  1. In “A Rose for Emily” (40) the story is not told in chronological order. Why and who might benefit from the telling or to say what is at stake and for whom and why? Explain you position using excerpts from the story.

4.In “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” (116) what is the significance of the reader as protagonist. Is the narrator simply asking questions to the reader or is he/she lecturing the reader. If you say asking questions prove your point. If you say lecturing or chiding the reader, prove your point and tell why and how this plays in to understanding the story.
