  • What is green marketing?
  • How does it relate to corporate social responsibility (CRS) and marketing ethics?
  • Provide an analysis of a company that is practicing and promoting green marketing. Are they successful in their efforts? Why or why not?

Student 1 from Laster, Jacob

Oftentimes, when one thinks of green marketing, they typically think of an organization implementing a new practice in order to reduce its carbon foot print on the environment. However, since its conception, green marketing has expanded to more than just concerns about the ozone layer. According to Peattie, K., & Charter, M. (2003), Green marketing has since integrated itself marketing practices and marketing theory (p.727). Furthermore, green marketing has developed to where organizations bend their practices to meet the needs of the customer, while being conscious of the finite environment (Peattie, K., & Charter, M. 2003. p. 727). Green marketing has gain such recognition because it has it has become ethical marketing wise to conserve the finite resources of the environment. In essence, society, as of late, deems it necessary to hold corporations just as socially accountable for the environment as it would the individual. For example Hunt, S. D., & Vitell, S. (1986). defines ethics as “inquiry into the nature and grounds of morality where the term morality is taken to mean moral judgments, standards, and rules of conduct (p. 6).” One example of unethical marketing behavior and lack of corporate social responsibility is abuse toward an environments water supply; moreover, the dumping of dangerous chemicals or toxic waste into a river. Conversely, an example of a company practicing green marketing would be making oil biodegradable or improving the quality of diesel fuel, such as the oil companies in India (Mishra, P., & Sharma, P. 2010. p. 12).

Student 2 from Rubert, Christine

Being green has grown in the last few years and not just in the market. More people are trying to go green and not hurt the environment any more than it has already been hurt. “Green or Environmental Marketing consists of all activities designed to generate and facilitate any exchanges intended to satisfy human needs or wants, such that the satisfaction of needs and wants occurs, with minimal detrimental impact on the natural environment (Polonsky, 1994, p. 2). However, there are companies out there that try to portray themselves as ones that use green marketing. When a company does that and it is not as green as it claims, it is using a practice called greenwashing (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). This does not make them look good when the truth comes out that they are not what they said. Satisfying the customers with their environmentally friendly products and making products that are environmentally friends are what makes a company successful with green marketing (Dangelico & Vocalelli, 2017). Corporate social responsibility has 4 different parts to it and ethics is one part of that pyramid. Ethics plays a big roll in green marketing because companies have to do what is right for the environment when taking the company on this path as well as not misleading their customers. A brand that I have noticed has some green products is Clorox. I have seen them in stores, but I do not believe that they have done the best at promoting them. They still have many products with harsh chemicals in them and some consumers believe the commercials saying that they need these products to get rid of germs and everything else.
