In-Depth Interview Question Guide: Political context’s effects on faculty
Humanities
For the purposes of the exercise, the class will be exploring the following research question:
How do faculty and staff at a large, urban public health school perceive that their work has been affected by the current political context?
The assignment has three parts:
1.) Write a semi-structured interview guide that is responsive to the research question. The guide should include between 5 and 8 questions; at least 3 should contain structured probes. Keep the following in mind:
- Utilize guidelines for writing open ended questions (e.g. “supposition lead in”). You do not need to label these guidelines
- Where appropriate, label the type of question or technique used (e.g. grand tour question; laddering). You do not need to use every type / technique, but use at least two
c. Be mindful of question order
d. Unstructured probes should not be written on the guide
2.) Conduct an actual interview with a faculty or staff member to whom you are assigned.
3.) Write one or two paragraphs (approx. 1 page double-spaced) reflecting on the experience. Be sure to include each of the following:
a. Your own feelings during the interview (e.g. nervous, curious, surprised)
b. Your attempt to use “reflexivity” as an interviewer
c. Something about the interview that went well
d. Something about the interview that was difficult or that you wish you could “do over”
e. Unstructured probes that you were able to use, and how successful or unsuccessful they were
f. One theme that emerged from the interview
