Directions
1. Read pages 146-155 about sleep and dreams. Watch the Scientific American video “What’s in a Dream?” available at this website: http://www.chedd-angier.com/frontiers/season11.html. The clip is in Episode 1 and begins at about the 30:00 mark.
2. Prepare a written assignment answering the following questions:
- Describe the five stages of sleep. What is happening to the brain and/or body in each stage?
- Describe at least one effect of sleep deprivation.
- Describe at least one sleep disorder.
- Which theory (psychoanalytic, activation-synthesis, or information processing/learning and memory (which was presented in the movie)) do you most agree with? Why?
- Give an example of a dream (it can be real or made up) and use your preferred dream theory to analyze or explain what is happening in the dream.

3. Write your answer in a word processing program and save the essay to your computer as a .doc or .docs file.
