Local Health Department

Rebecca Nanyonjo is the Director of Public Health for the Merced County Public Health Department (Department, 2019). Ms. Nanyonjo ensures the local public health department is employed with the appropriate staff to ensure all required programs are available to the public. The Merced County Public Health department has the following main categories available on their website that is available to the communities in which this health department represents. Community Health, Emergency Services, Environmental Health, First 5, and Public Health Services information.

Community Health Services offered by the Merced County Public Health Department consist of Classes associated with health issues that affect the community such as diabetes, chronic disease self-management, stress reduction, cessation- Quit Smoking, National Diabetes Prevention Program, Rethink your drink, and Nutrition Education (Department, 2019). This is one of the way in which local and state level of public health. According to the Institute of Medicine, future public health will emphasize the need for local and state government to extend their efforts in society to include public, private and civil society measures (Raymond L. Goldsteen, 2015). The state health department offers grants to support initiatives to improve community health in the communities that all health departments serve. As the director of public health, Ms. Nanyonjo works with the state health department to meet the set health initiatives that are voted on yearly. Ms. Nanyonjo applies for grants from the state health department. Her teams consist of 3 assistant directors who manage several other people that run the many initiatives and measures that the health department provides (Department, 2019).

Addressing Obesity on the state and local level is a priority (Pomeranz, 2011). In the case study, “The Unique Authority of State and Local Health Departments to Address Obesity, shared the importance of addressing obesity is creating regulations on menu labeling. By requiring companies to label foods, will bring awareness to the consumer regarding what and the amounts of healthy and unhealthy foods that they are consuming (Pomeranz, 2011).

Key similarities of the local and state department of health would be the mission of ensuring all communities have the available resources to promote a healthy community. Key differences would be the amount of authority the local and state department of health have over communities. The state has more power over regulations and measures that will be priority. The state department of health is over the local department of health.
