While a “management career” can often seem glamorous, it is really all about people! Successful management is all about being an effective leader for those under you and for whom you are responsible, as well as setting positive performance and communication skills to those above you, such as your manager, and their managers. Take a moment to reflect on various managers that you have worked for over the years.

  • Think about the best manager you’ve ever had.
    • What made him/her so good? Identify and discuss specific qualities.
    • How did the rest of your team (or other employees) feel about him/her?
    • Did he/she appear to be well-liked by higher management?
    • Would you be able to emulate these qualities if you were a manager? Why or why not?
  • Now think about the worst manager you’ve ever had.
    • What made him/her so bad? Identify and discuss specific qualities.
    • How did the rest of your team (or other employees) feel about him/her?
