you will write a comparison-and-contrast essay using Microsoft Word (or a similar word processor) to analyze the similarities and differences between two or more subjects. This essay will include YOUR point of view as a writer and specific language which will contribute to the tone or mood of your essay. You will use a variety of sources that your research to give information about your topic (books, movies, stories, Internet, magazines, etc.). Make sure you cite your sources correctly based on the MLA citation attachment. You need at least 3 sources for your essay.
Compare And Contrast “Microsoft vs. Apple”.
Your essay should feature the following elements:
- A topic involving two or more subjects that are different in some ways and similar in other ways
- An introduction that has a hook and presents the thesis, or main point. (An essay hook is the first one or two sentences of your essay. It serves as an introduction and works to grab the reader’s attention).
- A body that shows similarities and differences. You can use the “Block Method” or the “Point-by-Point” method (Look at the screenshots Attached)
- A conclusion that restates and reinforces the thesis
- Error-free writing. Use spelling and grammar check in Microsoft Word.
Your essay needs to have at least 5 PARAGRAPHS. Each paragraph should have 5-7 SENTENCES.
Use the following structure to organize your essay:
1st paragraph: Introduction– Use a hook as an attention grabber. (An essay hook is the first one or two sentences of your essay. It serves as an introduction and works to grab the reader’s attention). Tell what your topic is about, and present your thesis statement, or main point of your essay.
2nd paragraph: Compare/contrast first part of your topic (example: game rules for 2 sports, ingredients used in the 2 foods, famous landmarks in the 2 cities).
3rd paragraph: Compare/contrast second part of your topic (example: strategies for 2 sports, appearance of the 2 foods, family-friendly activities in the 2 cities).
4th paragraph: Compare/contrast the third part of your topic (example: statistics for 2 sports, taste of the 2 foods, best restaurants in the 2 cities).
5th paragraph: Conclusion– restate your thesis statement and what your topic is about. Give final thoughts and reflections about your topic.
Sources page: List the sources you used for your research (books, movies, stories, Internet, magazines, etc.). Make sure you cite your sources correctly based on the MLA citation attachment. You need at least 3 sources for your research.
Before you turn in your rough draft, ask yourself these questions:
- Is my essay organized well?
- Do I present a balanced view of each of the topics I am comparing and contrasting?
- Is the overall organization I chose for my comparison clear?
- Does my essay provide support for each aspect of my comparison?
- Did I cite my sources correctly using MLA format?
Before you turn in your final draft, please do the following:
- Check language and spelling.
- Check overall balance.
- Check organization and structure.
- Revise for formal language.
- Check voice.
