Multisystemic Therapy for Child Abuse and Neglect (MST-CAN) was developed to treat families who have been referred to Child Protective Services (CPS) due to physical abuse and/or neglect. The therapy focuses on the whole family providing treatment that enables parents to overcome the challenges they face in parenting in addition to taking measures to ensure the safety of the child. The system requires cooperation between service providers and has seen some success in reducing the number of repeated incidents and lowering the number of children removed from parental custody. Based on your reading, research and experience, describe the principles of MST-CAN and provide an example of how they are implemented in treatment. How is success determined? What are the drawbacks to the approach? What do you think the greatest impediment to success would be? How comfortable would you be using MST-CAN?
