On Liberty, John Stuart Mill gives an extended argument about the importance of Freedom of Speech (i.e., “liberty of thought and discussion”). In a formal argumentative essay:
1. Explain the moral foundation of Mill’s arguments about government.
2. Explain Mill’s argument in support of liberty of thought and discussion. (Be sure to discuss both “branches” of his argument).
3. Finally, discuss whether or not you think that Freedom of Speech is important, including what role you think the government should have, if any, in supporting Freedom of Speech. Be sure to give an argument in favor of your position. (A useful strategy for this section might be to comment on and/or criticize some part of Mill’s argument.)
