Since The Affordable Care Act of 2010 there has been a lot of attention given to the demand for higher degree nurses. One of the initiatives and goals of the new healthcare reform was to create a greater volume of nurse hold a baccalaureate of science degree. Several studies since that time have concluded a direct connection between a BSN degree and lower mortality rates in hospitals. The lower mortality rates are compared to those hospitals where there are greater numbers of ADN nurses. The research has shown greater patient outcome and lower mortality rates in hospitals with larger percentages of BSN nurses, although studies have not concluded exactly why this is so.
In the experience of this writer, more experience on the job gives the patient a greater outcome and would lead to lower mortality rates. As One preceptor said to me years ago, the new nurses don`t know what they don`t know. I feel the lower mortality rates are reflected by BSN nurses having taken the time to complete the degree, therefore are more invested in their career. More dedication to their career leads directly to better patient care and lower mortality. Greater experience can be weighed against less experience with an associated higher degree.
Higher education for nurses reflects in greater overall knowledge and a more developed skillset for nurses. I can recognize this as a great advantage to patients at whatever level of care they may need.
