I chose Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (D-IL-14) , she was sworn into the 116th U.S. Congress on January 3, 2019. Prior to be in sworn in she worked with a Medicaid plan in Chicago to ensure that it provided high-quality, cost-efficient care, served as a Senior Advisor at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), helped communities across the country prevent, prepared for, and responded to disasters, bioterrorism threats, and public health emergencies, helped implement the Affordable Care Act — broadened access for those on Medicare, improved healthcare quality, and reformed private insurance. Congresswoman Underwood also taught future nurse practitioners through Georgetown University’s online master’s program, a graduate of the University of Michigan and Johns Hopkins University.
As of March 6, 2019 she was participated in a hearing about the issue with family separation practices that were performed by Homeland Security. Below is a statement she made during the hearing:
“I’m a nurse. I want to be very clear about what family separation is doing to children’s mental and physical health,” Congresswoman Underwood said. “From what I’ve heard today, I’m not sure if the Department of Homeland Security was so negligent they didn’t know how traumatic family separation was for children, or if they knew and did it anyway. In my opinion, both are unacceptable.”
She seems to have taken off well in her new position. She has not sponsored any bills for health care. She is against family separation which can affect patient’s physical and mental health. She is only 32 years old which is amazing considering her resume. I would not be surprised if sponsors any future bill that improve health care.
