The Patient protection and Affordable Care Act is an attempt to transition to disease oriented care and instead focuses on wellness and prevention. Nurses are at the front lines of implementing this program. One of the departments I work for is Wound care and IV therapy. I find an opportunity in this department to promote health wellness for the patient and family. Many patients are unhealthy from obesity, smoking or other factors. These unhealthy habits are hard to break but there are patients that can change their lifestyle. This is not the case in all departments unfortunately where the work load may be too high.
