(Virtual) Gallery Review
For this Writing Assignment you will be taking a virtual tour of an art gallery and writing a critique or review of what you see there. This will be a real exhibit of artwork that is on view somewhere in the world, but due to our current situation, you’ll be viewing it remotely from your own home.
Gallery Review Guidelines
Here are some guidelines to help you to write about your visit. This must be double spaced, proof it carefully, no greater than 12 point font, and write at least 800 words.
You can choose a virtual exhibition at any of the following sites:
- https://spencerbrownstonegallery.com/exhibitions/switch-back (Links to an external site.)
- http://www.ortuzarprojects.com/ (Links to an external site.)
- https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/channel/ (Links to an external site.)
Please remember that you are to write about a single exhibition, not the entire collection of the museum or gallery. You are also writing about your own virtual experience.
Part I: First identify the exhibit. Basic information to include:
Part I of your critique should demonstrate that you have thought critically about the exhibit as a whole; merely writing “I liked it†or “It was horrible!†will be insufficient. Instead, try and focus on providing reasons as to why it was you liked (or disliked) the art. The “Exhibit” refers to the entire group of artworks shown in a particular gallery space, usually the work of a single artist, or a group of artists organized around a common theme. Here are some questions to consider:
- Was there any special purpose to the exhibit? If so, explain.
- When and where did the exhibit take place?
- Who was the artist(s)?
- What types of media were used?
- How did the exhibit look to you?
- How did the artist relate to the audience?
- How did viewing the work through a virtual tour affect your experience?
- What, if anything, would have made this exhibit better?
- What value did this exhibit have for you?
Part II: Choose ONE selected artwork and give a focused discussion of it using the Elements of Art (color, line, shape, form, texture, mass) and Principles of Design (rhythm, repetition, balance, scale, emphasis, subordination)and the Media Process (such as Bronze casting) used according to your textbook. Include a critical evaluation of the work in terms of artistic and cultural value, expression & composition.
- Who is the artist, and what is the title of the piece?
- What is the (media) medium?
- What images do you see if any?
- How do you feel about the artwork; does it evoke an emotion, make you think, or pose more questions than answers?
- What colors are emphasized and how do the colors relate to the color wheel?
- How is the design or composition constructed?
- Is there a theme or message?
- Explain why you chose the work.
- Was the artwork well executed? Why, or why not?
- Does the artist possess skill or seem talented to you? Why, or why not?
You must upload your gallery report as a Microsoft WORD (.doc or .docx) file.
