Question
Surrey’s “Love that doth reign and live within my thought” and Wyatt’s “The long love that in my thought doth harbor” are both “translations” of Petrarch’s sonnet 140. If you did not know that, would you have recognized Wyatt’s and Surry’s poems as the same? What is the tone of Wyatt’s poem? What is the tone of Surrey’s poem? In what specific words or phrases would you locate evidence of that tone? What is the “banner” that both poets refer to? Who is the master? What are their relationships to that master? How do each of them relate to the woman in the poem? What is her attitude in each of the poems? Can you piece together enough of the Petrarch poem to offer any ideas on how the Wyatt and Surrey poems differ from the Petrarchan original?
