Philosophy of Language: directness and indirectness FINAL DRAFT
Humanities
Hi Henry Professor,
I will attach your original work that you did. I will also attach the two readings that you used.
Use in line citations mla style if youre not sure how refer to this link:https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/m…
The paper is already a little over 6 pages so youre not adding much more. Just editing based on the bold writing below which is the professors comments given on the first draft.
Might be an idea to give a concrete example in your opening of what you mean by a difference in conversational style.
The characterization of indirectness is excellent. I also appreciate the wide range and fairly vivid presentation of examples of indirectness.
The motivations are discussed well, though do not quite go far enough. Instead of saying, e.g., that an indirect form is polite, say explicitly how it conforms to one of the rules of politeness or satisfies someone’s “face-want,” etc., thereby allowing the uptake of the speech act to proceed smoothly.
The Do’s and Don’ts part is good too, though there is a little overlap here. It might be a good idea to brainstorm up some further suggestions.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
