After viewing all of the six folders, please answer the questions below. I also uploaded sample file for you.

1. Margaret Wise Brown, Profile & GOODNIGHT MOON

2. Profile of Clement Hurd

3. Sendak’s acceptance speech for the Caldecott Medal for WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, 1964

From the Caldecott Medal website:

“The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.”

4. Maurice Sendak Studio Apartment Interview – 1966

Sendak was a serious artist, as you’ll see in this vintage interview from 1966 where he talks about his influences and about WTWTA.

5.

Getting To Know Maurice Sendak (1985 interview / short documentary)

Another book that is “classic” Sendak (though perhaps not seen as much by children as by adults!) is his IN THE NIGHT KITCHEN, which is full of recognizable images and influences from Sendak’s own childhood — Laurel & Hardy; Mickey Mouse; etc. This one was/is also controversial with some parents and educators because it features the illustration of a little boy who is naked. In this video, Sendak talks about that book but also gives some interesting insights into WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE.

6. Maurice Sendak – ‘You Have to Take the Dive’ | TateShots (Youtube)

It is so interesting to view this chat by Sendak as a much older man after watching the previous videos where he is younger.

1.) What about Margaret Wise Brown’s biographical profile surprises you, and why?

2.) What was the Bank Street College and what was its breakthrough idea in education?

3.) How did Clement Hurd become the illustrator of GOODNIGHT MOON?

4.) What differences and similarities (besides aging!) do you notice in the 3 videos of Maurice Sendak (attitudes, concerns, etc.)?

5.) What surprises you about the background / creation process of WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE?
