Introduction
There are many sources of stress attached to issues that police administrators must deal with in terms of drug use by police officers within their own agencies. Some relevant questions and concerns arise as a result, such as what positions employee unions or other employees will take if drug testing is proposed? Questions will also arise as to who should be tested for drugs. For example, should just entry-level officers be tested, or should regular officers be tested on a random basis, or should all officers be tested before they are promoted? When a supervisor has reasonable suspicion of a subordinate’s drug use is going to be a focal point of the resultant analysis.
Instructions
Review the media On-the-Job Stress and Civil Liability. From the perspective of a law enforcement administrator, prepare a three-page paper, citing a minimum of one case on point and two academically verified references. In your paper:
- Lay out the positions employees take if drug testing is proposed in your department.
- Outline the decision-making process you, as a police supervisor, would go through to determine whether reasonable suspicion of a subordinate’s drug use exists.
- Predict, as a police chief, the disciplinary action that would be implemented when officers are found to have abused drugs in your department.
