I support the small humanitarian gesture that San-Diego non-profit humanitarian organization has made to distribute blankets, clothes and water for the illegal immigrants. My decision to support the organization has been influenced by several key points that should be evaluated before any criticism is leveled at them.
The decision to distribute blankets and other essential items to the immigrants was made after the organization and the general population had already realized not only the dangers in the desert but also the number of deaths the journey had resulted in. Despite these all too apparent dangers that the desert holds which include among others -the searing heat during the day, the lack of water, the freezing cold or even possible death from starvation-, the immigrants had always been prepared to try and cross the border with or without the NGO’s help. This realization therefore tipped the scales in the decision making process behind the move.
The effects that illegal immigration have had in the US are numerous and have affected nearly everyone in one way or another. It has resulted in the decline of jobs in the country and the decline in the percentage of wages. This effects have resulted in a negative attitude about the illegal immigrants despite the amount of harm they may or may not cause. Despite this, it is important to note the psychological effects that are likely to occur with pleading ignorance to the death of thousands. The effects of aiding the immigrants might be harsh on the economy and other stakeholders but the blame cannot be put on the organization rather on a justice system/government if it is unable to protect the citizens. Being an independent entity therefore, the organization is allowed to make this decision without consideration of the reasons for immigration or the consequences that the said act may amount to. In fact, the organization should be lauded for referring to their actions as ‘simple humanitarian aid’.
One of the rhetorical device that I used in this article is understatement. Despite the benefits and effect that the organization has had, I referred to it as a ‘small humanitarian gesture’. I also used parallelism in the whole article by using phrases and sentences that have similar structures.
