You will need to disagree with the comment that I post below. She argues why punishment is necessary to discipline children, so you will argue why you think is not necessary and what other methods parents can use.
Corporal punishment is punishment intended to cause physical pain to a person. I believe that using corporal punishment to discipline a young child is necessary if it is not done in excess and there is a reason behind doing it. Althought there are some studies that show that corporal punishment can lead to increased aggression, antisocial behavior, physical injury and mental health problems for children, there are also studies that show how it is beneficial. It sets clear boundaries, it creates a shock factor for children, it helps to teach respect, and some children would rather a beaten (something that is quick) over being punished to their room over a period time.
The biggest issue with corporal punishment is the thin line between punishment and abuse. Some people abuse their child and leave marks and bruises. In those instances, I believe that it causes a child to develop issues. I also belive that it depends on what you do after the child is beat and how often you beat your child. For example, if my child kept getting in trouble in school, I would eventually give him/her a beaten and when they calm down, explain to them why the beaten was administered. I would also let them know that I love them. I do think that beating them often and telling that you love them causes them to associate being beat with love but thats why its a fine line and should not be done all of the time. Parents should find alternatives to beating their child, but I also believe that it is effective.
