In this assignment we’re going to examine the issue of medicating children with mental disorders. Today we will watch a 12-minute segment from the ABC television program Nightline about two young girls with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and then discuss what we saw. You will then write your paper on whether one of these girls, Jade, should continue to take the medication she is taking for this disorder. [You can also view this segment again because I have posted it on Canvas in the Assignments module.]
Besides learning about OCD and the issue of medicating children for psychological disorders, this assignment also asks you to do some library research to back up your conclusions. In some college assignments you will be asked to cite the references you find in APA (American Psychological Association) style at the end of the paper. But in this assignment I’m asking that you show your library research up front, in the first paragraph. Then you’ll use these references to develop your answer to the question “Should Jade keep taking the medication?”
What you will submit is a paper with four paragraphs:
1. Cite at least two academic scholarly articles that (1) relate to the topic of medicating children with psychological disorders, and (2) presents a scholarly author’s own analysis or review of others’ research. [A newspaper or magazine article or an article you find on the World Wide Web is usually not useful here because it is probably written by a journalist who read an academic scholarly article and then summarized it.] You should list the article title, the journal title, what database you used to find the article, along with the volume and issue, date, and page numbers. [We will have some help from the COS Learning Resource Center (Library) staff to show you how to find these. One of our classes before you submit your paper will be a demonstration from the Library staff about how to do this research.] This paragraph will begin with “The two primary source articles I found and read are:” Then you should explain briefly why you think these two articles relate well to the topic question. You will earn points in this area by how well your two articles connect to this specific case study.
2. What are the best arguments for continuing to give Jade this medication? Here you need to consider what evidence there is that the medications actually improve behavior. How exactly will they help? Cite specific passages from your primary-source articles that support the arguments for continuing Jade’s medication.
3. What are the best arguments for stopping Jade’s medication? Here you need to consider what evidence there is that the medications either don’t work or cause other important problems. Cite specific passages from your primary-source articles that support the arguments for stopping Jade’s medication.
4. In paragraphs two and three, you had to present the pro’s and con’s of this question. Now, in the last paragraph, summarize what you think is the best option for Jade – to continue or discontinue the medication. Did any of the ideas presented in the class discussion have an impact on your decision? How will your decision help the child today and in his future? How would the opposite decision harm this child today and in his future? If you were the Jade’s parents, was this an easy or difficult decision to make? Why or why not?
This assignment will be worth 20 points. You’ll receive up to four points for each of the four questions above, plus four points based on your technical writing skills (spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc.)
The minimum word count to do this assignment well is 1,000 words, or about three pages double-spaced. You don’t have to submit it in double-space format, however, because I don’t enter my grading remarks directly on the paper itself. You can submit it single-spaced. [If you want to get an idea of how much 1,000 words is, this assignment document is 887 words long.]
Although I will accept hand-written papers, I strongly prefer type-written papers in either Calibri font (like this) or Arial font (like this) or Times New Roman (like this) and anywhere from 10 to 12 point font size. Handwritten papers will have 1 point (out of 20) deducted.

The last line is where you tell me whether or not I can use parts of your paper in classroom discussion for learning purposes. It is sometimes helpful for me to use examples of writing to illuminate a point about the material or the writing assignment. When I do use examples in class, these are my rules:
– I don’t identify the student by name; if they choose to identify themselves during the classroom discussion they may do so
– I never use examples in order to criticize, embarrass, or humiliate
– I use examples to show good work or to show how a point made raises other interesting questions.
