reflection 2 and 3

Reflections 2, 3, and 4 and Extra Credit Reflections

The topics of the remaining reflections will be fairly flexible. You have the choice to reflect on:

  • A campus/college activity you participated in
  • A civic action

You will select either campus events or civic actions to reflect on for the remaining required reflections. If you wish to write more reflections than required, your additional reflections will be rewarded with extra credit points. Please read the following directions carefully.

Directions for a campus activity reflection:

If your class as a group attends a campus activity, you will be required to submit the next reflection on that activity. Our campus has many quality campus events offering immeasurable amounts of personal and professional growth. Whenever possible, we will participate in these events together.

If you attend an event on your own, you are welcome to write and submit a reflection on that event. Events are advertised on the campus’s website (http://www.mdc.edu/north/), Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/MDCNorth/), and in your email. I may also post invitations to events taking place outside of class time as an announcement in Blackboard.

Directions for a civic action reflection:

Miami Dade College’s Institute for Civic Engagement and Democracy (iCED) invites students to participate in a civic action challenge. Collect 100 points for activities listed on the “Civic Action Scorecard” to earn iCED’s Civic Action Award. Some of the activities (marked with a red asterisk) on the Civic Action Scorecard require reflections. I am offering you the opportunity to double-dip; that is, you are welcome to submit the reflections you write for civic action points to iCED as well as for a grade to me. Please note that while iCED accepts reflections in various forms, I accept only written reflections of at least 200 words.

The Civic Action Scorecard is posted at: http://www.mdc.edu/main/iced/awards/ (Click on “Civic Action Award Instructions and Checklist.”). Because the reflection for class is due soon, you may want to start with activities that do not require much preparation:

Final note: In preparation for your reflections, I recommend that you

  • read actively and annotate texts (articles, handouts, etc.) you read,
  • use a double-entry notebook/journal (see Bedford Handbook p. 99) as you take notes at campus events or civic action activities, and
  • review the general guidelines for writing reflections on your first reflection handout or in Blackboard. The word count for civic action reflections is lowered to 200 words.
