What are the differences between principle ethics and virtue ethics?
Principle Ethics are the base moral standard beliefs and ideals in the human services professions that are common and shared throughout the profession.
Virtue Ethics are the base moral standard that professional ethics are more than moral actions. They involve a professionalâ€
s character or virtue. Virtue ethics focus more on the professional as a person. The personal character of the professional guides their behavior within their profession. Principle ethics poses the question, “What should I do?” Virtue ethics ask, “Who should I be?”
Which type or types of ethics are represented in your profession?
As an addiction professional, practicing ethical standards is the cornerstone of the profession. State regulations demand that people in treatment not be taken advantage of, used or treated less than the population in need that they are. These standards can be followed without adding the humanistic side of it. Virtue ethics demonstrates the compassion and integrity that is needed to help others as well as following the principle ethics. In laymanâ€
s terms, my job provides manuals and required electronic training that clarifies the standards and laws to protect the clients and ourselves from unethical situations or practices. This is, in fact, the model we work by.
My moral compass and who I am as an individual takesâ€
ethics to the next level. This personal standard follows me in my personal life as well as my professional like. Both types of ethics are represented in my profession. There are those who lack the understanding on both sides, but this is not productive in my profession. There are no gray areas in this field. I believe this is the case because hurting people need to build that trust because most of them began their journey not being able to trust anyone on a fundamental level. Being in treatment is the beginning of change. Holding professionals at a high ethical standard helps facilitate the clientâ€
s growth.
