Managing personnel in a corrections setting brings a unique set of issues.Even at the lowest level, correction officers must make split decisions that impact inmates and staff alike.Officers are asked to sometimes make life and death decision very quickly.Officers need to learn how to communicate in a concise and respectful manner and make sure that the information that is conveyed is correct as well.It takes a longer process to hire in a governmental unit as opposed to the private sector.Letting go of personnel in the private sector is quick and easy.If you have an employee in the governmental sector there is extensive documentation that needs to take place.Equipment and other purchases take a long process for approval as opposed to the private sector.
Trusting the training that your officers and middle management have gone through to give them the tools they need to succeed and make the proper choices is a vital role in management.I think that communication is at the top of the list when it comes to managing in corrections.If there are good communications from top to bottom and bottom to top there shouldnâ€
t be any surprises when it comes to questions that arise on either end.Documentation for all involved in anything is an absolute must. Documentation during training, documentation during hands on, documentation during complaint review, documentation for any verbal, written or suspension of officers, documentation for promotion and any needs that may arise from management are all essential for support in any problems that arise.
Supporting the staff in their decisions if policy is followed is a must.Management needs to support their team as a strong front and show the inmates that it is a team that stands together.Admitting when you are wrong and rectifying the situation is a must and shows the inmates that policy is followed, and the institution and their safety are at the top of the priority list.Fostering that mutual respect is the only way that an institution will survive.Inmates outnumber staff usually disparagingly.
At the county jail that I was a corporal that supervised a team of four and there were a mandatory three staff required in the facility for every shift.The facility held a hundred and twenty-six beds and averaged around one hundred.The corporal organized the shift duties and assigned daily duties for each officer.Trusting that the officers knew their jobs and could be flexible when there was a need or crisis was critical and made my job easier.In crisis we all filled into our roles and worked as a cohesive team.We always debriefed after events as time allowed and went back to our duties as assigned.I was lucky enough to have a seasoned veteran and two other great workers on my shift.The longer we worked together the easier we moved as a team and just assumed our roles seamlessly.
