In the article, The Need for Cultural Competency in Health Care the author states, “Increasing diversity, combined with the specific health care needs of each patient, has made cultural competence a critical issue” (Abrishami, 2018, p.447). The United States is increasingly becoming more diverse. It is important for the nurse to be educated on the different types of cultures. Some hospitals offer classes that can help a person gain knowledge about the different cultures.
The community nurse can recognize bias and stereotypes within the community by being more culturally educated. To be knowledgeable on the different kinds of cultures and beliefs people have is an important to thing to have as a nurse. By being more culturally competent the nurse can provide better and more equal care. Some strategies that a nurse can employ to reduce cultural dissonance include; talking to your patient to find out what needs they have, accommodating those needs, and providing care that takes those needs into consideration. For example, if a Muslim woman does not want a male nurse then the community health nurse should work with that patient to provide them with a female staff member to be their nurse.
