rethinking death.

The general idea of this assignment is that you and your group are writing one of seven chapters in a book called rethinking death. Each one of our course topics has a specific relation to either understanding the forces that shape out death attitudes, illuminating inconsistencies in how we think about death, or demonstrating that death attitudes can and do change. The most important goal of your chapter is to make an argument related to the question of where our death attitudes come from and can they be changed.

Format.

• The introduction section should start with a clear statement of the problem addressed by chapter and how it relates to death attitudes.

• The body of the paper can be organized in any way you choose, but it should be written in such a way that for each major section it is clear how the material relates to the issues of rethinking death.

• The paper should end with a conclusion section that summarizes your arguments/findings and their relevance to the idea of rethinking death.

Process. The paper should be written using this general process.

• The process should begin from the first day of class. Get together with your group. Get to know one another, discuss your strengths and weaknesses, compare schedules, and make a calendar to schedule work meetings and deadlines.

• Absorb the references and ideas that arise from the full class discussion of your topic. Take initiative to point out to the class the topics you would like more coverage of in the Thursday class meeting.

• Once you have created a general outline and divided the work, collect sources and read broadly. As your specific arguments take shape in your mind, focus your reading and start writing.

• Your draft to be submitted for peer review should be completed a week before it is due.

• Once you have the class feedback, make your revisions and submit it prior to the deadline specified on the syllabus.

Final Product. This is a semester-long project. It is a substantial piece of scholarly work. Each group member should contribute 10-15 pages of text, using 20-30 references.

Major Paper 2

Working in Groups. In the world you are about to enter, working in groups is the rule, not the exception. This assignment is an opportunity to identify your strengths and weaknesses as a collaborator, and to practice basic skills like communication, organization, flexibility, and balancing kindness and firmness.

Getting Help. Please ask me for help at any point in the process. You are also free to ask anyone else you know (grad students, faculty) for help and advice. Ultimately, though, the paper must be your idea, and the thoughts and words must be your own.

References. The references use in the paper should be cited in the text and listed in the reference section at the end in a manner that approximates APA style. Please do not cite everything you read in an attempt to “get more credit”. Some stuff you read will be useful for you to know as you arrive at your idea and method, but may not be useful to the reader in understanding the why and what of your paper. References are tools that you use to support the importance of your research question, and justify the choices you make as you develop a research method. Adding useless or gratuitous references can hurt a paper.
