Both poems do not specifically address male or female. When referring to the speaker in the poems, you will include him/her or he/she;
Both poems do not describe a loss of a loved one. In Oliver’s poem, the speaker describes how he/she discovered that something from the past turned into something positive in the present. Someone that the speaker knew gave him/her a negative gift–it could be a simple “No” to a request, to not being there to help out in a situation. Oliver’s poem is not specifically about a love one. The theme in both poems: how the past impact the present.
In contrast, Bishop’s poem is simply a speaker describing how the lessons from the past helped him/her grow up about losing things, object, and people. The past presented a positive learning experience in the present for the him/her. It is not about losing a loved one. Although this is the last stanza, this part of the lesson of adapting a positive lesson in losing small to large things and people.
