Revolutionary Women Extra-credit Opportunity
Watch one of the following films and write approximately 200-250 words analyzing it in the context of the issues discussed in this class. In order to get credit, you must (1) make it clear to me that you have watched the entire film and (2) reference specific and relevant issues/examples from the class. This credit will be applied to either your Quiz or Participation grade (where you need it most). You may also complete this exercise twice – and one credit will be applied to your Quiz grade and one to Participation.
- The Wind that Shakes the Barley (2006): A feature film about two brothers during the Irish revolution and Civil War. To get credit, you must discuss the representation of women’s roles in this film. Available to rent on Amazon and iTunes.
- Concerning Violence: Nine Scenes from the Anti-Imperialistic Self Defense (2014): A documentary – often graphic – on Frantz Fanon and liberation struggles, especially in Africa. Available on Kanopy*.
- Pussy Riot: The Movement (2013): A documentary about a contemporary protest and resistance movement in Russia. Available on Kanopy*.
- The Suffragists: Political Struggles for Women in Mexico (2012). A documentary about Efrosina Cruz, putting her story into the broader history of women’s struggles since the Mexican Revolution. In Spanish. Available on Kanopy*.
- Autumn Gem: Modern China’s First Feminist (2009). A documentary about the revolutionary, Qiu Jin (1875-1907). Available on Kanopy*.
- Iron-Jawed Angels (2004): A feature film on the suffrage movement in the United States. Not available for streaming other than on YouTube.
- Rachel Carson: The Woman Who Launched the Modern Environmental Movement (2017). A PBS documentary. Available on Kanopy*.*Kanopy is a film database available through the UCI Library, but you must be on campus or using a VPN to access it.
