One of the most notable incongruities in working with the prison population is the counseling that they should return to their former hometowns. However, many may need to relocate to another state or leave their “old stomping grounds” for a new beginning. It is forced in extreme cases for relocation.
The current counseling trend is family therapy. Many professionals counsel that you need the family and that extra support. This is true if positive and productive extended, family members surround that client. We have seen entire families, including grandma and grandpa in the gang, with felonies, and or selling illegal drugs. Unfortunately, many need to relocate and cultivate a new family system and positive friends.
This Ted Talks video will update you on some of the current issues:
Prison Reform – Dan Pacholke
What misnomers should be revised to assist in the mass incarceration dilemma of the USA? Do you think that clients need to leave their extended families?
2. Respond with 200 words, use credible sources, and use citations
The immediate misnomer that comes to mind is “the hole,” I think this process needs to be revised and minimized. I agree that in extreme circumstances prisoners may be isolated but as a common fall back for punishment I believe the hole provides lack of human contact and isolation, while deteriorating the prisoner, resulting in a minimized rehabilitation. I think additional counseling resources should be incorporated prior to sending them to “the hole.”
I think clients leaving their extended families depends upon the situation. There are some individuals whose immediate and extended families provide their support, where there are some that prove to be detrimental to the client’s rehabilitation. I also believe culture has an impact on family support. From what I’ve experienced, the Hispanic culture is very family oriented and supportive, if this is the case they would likely support the client’s rehabilitation and aid the counselor in their treatment plan. Again, this would depend on whether or not the extended family is a positive influence in the client’s life.
