Purpose of AssignmentThe purpose of this speech is to develop an effective, engaging presentation that informs the audience about your chosen topic. The emphasis of this assignment is on the clear explanation of your topic and the effectiveness of its arrangement and delivery.
Speech Requirements:
1. The topic should be informative and intellectually challenging to a university audience. Attempting to inform the class about the benefits of not doing homework is not an intellectually challenging topic.
2. The speech should be six to seven (6-7) minutes in length. A speech not within this window will incur in a deduction of points from its overall assignment grade.
3. The introduction should grab the audience’s attention, introduce the topic and thesis, give the audience a reason to listen (why is this topic important?), establish your credibility (have you done your research?), and preview your supporting information (main points). There should be three (3) main points included in the body of your speech [TAPS 140-163].
4. The conclusion should review your main points, restate your purpose (thesis), and include a clincher statement (tying back to your attention getter). [TAPS 184-203].
5. There should be clear, logical transitions linking each element of the speech [TAPS 178-183].
6. Main points should be clearly stated and explained [TAPS 220-237].
7. The body (main points) of your speech should progress in a logical fashion. Failing to organize your speech clearly may result in an ineffective delivery! Make sure you take time to structure your speech and practice your delivery! [TAPS 164-174].
8. You are to use at least three different types of supporting materials, from at least three different sources. You must cite your sources appropriately in your speech. Supporting materials might include (but are not limited to): referencing peer-reviewed journal articles to add credibility to your speech, infographics from primary sources, published expert reports, etc. [TAPS 118-139].
9. A typed outline, submitted on the day of the speech (hard copy!), should:
• Follow the correct outline format [TAPS 204-219]
• State your specific NPO and thesis [TAPS 220-237]
• Include and label the parts of the introduction and conclusion
• Include and label your transition statements
• Label at least 3 different types of supporting materials (e.g., examples, testimony, statistics, infographics, anecdotes).
• Include a reference list in a standardized format (APA or MLA) with at least three different sources.
