2023 Nursing philosophy is the core of nursing practice It is a perspective that I feel can differ

2023 Nursing CLASS 2 COMMENT 2

Nursing philosophy is the core of nursing practice It is a perspective that I feel can differ 2023

Nursing philosophy is the core of nursing practice. It is a perspective that I feel can differ from nurse to nurse based off of their views and experiences.   According to Poliforni, “a philosophy will deem some ideas correct, others inconsistent, and some simply wrong” (pg 3). Philosophies are ever changing and can be proven right or wrong. The important thing is to be able to adapt and change views when it means putting patient’s first. Whether a registered nurse, or an advanced practice nurse, consistency of actions is key for  patients.

I believe a key value to nursing philosophies is empathy. Without empathy, it is very difficult to be able to be a patient advocate. Having the ability to put oneself in a patients shoes, and really understand what they are going through, is a philosophy I would like to strive for as an advanced practice nurse. “One of the basic building blocks of ethics and ethical conduct towards others is empathy” (Dinikins 2011).

In conclusion, nursing is a profession where something new is learned everyday. Not one day is the same as another. Being able to adapt a philosophy and include empathy for my patients is something I intend on practicing as an advanced practice nurse.

Re:Topic 5 DQ 1

The qualitative research method is gaining recognition in nursing. The fact that it is evident based, has highly catapulted its domination, especially in randomized clinical trials. On the other hand, choosing an ethical and practical path which considers the nursing role more valuable in health care systems becomes difficult while using qualitative research. This, therefore, calls for quantitative research. This evidence proves that both quantitative and qualitative research should both be involved in nursing research, outweighs another in a way or two. Meaning, creating a balance between the two methods, is the only way to carry out an effective nursing research (Holloway & Galvin, 2016).

Quantitative research has always been the most preferable method in medical research fields.  This is because quantitative data are the path to reaching an accurate approach while analysing and collecting health data. It is based upon numbers. It enables researchers to be deductive instead of inductive. This gives it an advantage of being very precise, which is the most important element in medical research. It also gives room to generalization of a particular phenomenon under many circumstances.

However, this method offers an improper presentation of a particular phenomenon. This might hinder a researcher from achieving the desired objective. Miscalculations of probability distribution may also be evident. Thus, leading to falsity in propositions. For example, A study that purports to check the number of women of 20-30 years with cervical cancers. The target population may be women living in both rural areas and those that live in urban areas. In order to find the probability of infection, the sampled population has to be calculated against the sum of females living in the areas.  The results will be unsuitable for generalization as there exists a scope of receiving partial information as not all women may show up for screenings, due to various reasons, and certain type of tumours may not be recognized at a very early stage (Holloway & Galvin, 2016).

According to Fan, (2017), qualitative research is an attempt to explain a particular phenomenon in a holistic form. It answers the question of ‘why’ not ‘how’. This way, it analyses the unstructured information in nursing discipline. It is conducted on a small scale and is also used to explore the hypothesis in nursing research. It concentrates on what has been said rather despite the number of times it occurs. Qualitative research enables researchers to understand hidden motivations in the particular target group. It allows an individual to gain a deep know-how on attitudes, sensitive thresholds, evaluations, barriers, needs and desires of the phenomenon under study (Fan, 2017). The method is majorly focused on revealing in-depth information as the techniques used in the method allows the reader to ask questions in an indirect pattern as well. These questions (indirect), enables participants to project unconscious or hidden motives, attitudes, feelings, and beliefs that are associated with a case under study.

Fan, also demonstrated that this method allows nursing researchers to use subjective information as it is not limited to, building new theories, defined variables, and exploring new ideas. However, he viewed this method as giving ‘classical’ researchers difficult time in understanding it. Therefore, research biases may easily build during the study.

Use of both methods will increase the effectiveness in a research. For example, the study of chronic pain management of American Indians will require both quantitative and qualitative research methods in order to analyse quantitative data collected in both state and national levels. At the same time, qualitative method will be required to analyse, the needs, barriers and desires of the victims.

Conclusion

After keeping a close check on both research methods, none of them is less or more effective. This is because all of them have pros and cons. For instance, because the qualitative method is unable to use numbers straight away, and don’t involve 1000 participants in their test, does not prove that it is non scientific. Qualitative methods will provide more details concerning a particular problem as well as the  details which a researcher may have never gained while using quantitative research.
