Though many Americans consider the President to represent the people (agreement with this statement usually depends on whether you like the sitting president or not), Congress was intentionally established to represent the people. Specifically, under the Constitution’s original scheme, members of the House of Representatives represented the people of their district, while the Senate represented the states’ interest. Eventually, the Senate would be elected by the people as well, and Senators would also become representatives of the people of their entire state. In today’s society, each House member represents approximately 700,000 people, while two Senators from each state represent the entire population of the state. What are the different ways congressional members can represent the people? Which way(s) are best? Why? What, if any, role does representation of people play in creating gridlock in Congress?
