the flight from conversation
“The Flight from Conversation†by Sherry Turkle
“Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?†by Jean Twenge
Sherry Turkle says that “the little devices most of us carry around are so powerful that they change not only what we do, but also who we are” (1). She is concerned about what we may be losing in our transition to a society that interacts increasingly online. We see this idea exemplified quite dramatically in Twenge’s essay where she argues that “the arrival of the smartphone has radically changed every aspect of teenagers’ lives, from the nature of their social interactions to their mental health” (6). Both authors identify a loss in social bonding and civilized conversation in the age of social media. But how can society find hope within the evolving landscape of social media? In this time of global crisis, what will trust in, and reliance on, technology do for us, and to us, either as individuals, or as communities and societies?
For your essay, discuss how the transition to an increasingly wired society is transforming our lives both for the better and for the worse. How we can use social media to strengthen our connections with one another?
