Hello Yuhao Lin and Zhengxi Zhang,
Here are instructions for your debate, which I would like you to post by Sun. 3/17 in the debate 8.3 discussion under Module 8, Week 8). I’ll be asking students to vote before and afterwards whether or not they agree with the statement you choose, so make sure you are addressing the statement. Please contact each other to coordinate your position statements and responses. You can use “inbox” to send a message to a particular person on Canvas.
1. Post the statement that you chose, from those listed below (or one that you’ve created on this week’s readings). Label this posting “proposition.”
2. Post a 1.5 page double-spaced presentation supporting your position (for or against) the statement chosen. Your presentation should be full of “convincing facts” from our texts or your research to sway the audience to your point of view on the question. Label your statement “pro” (for) or “con” (against) so we will know where you stand on the statement.
2. your opponent posts his/her 1.5 page presentation for or against the statement.
3. Read your opponent’s statement, and post a 1 page response to his or her points, why you think he or she is wrong, what you can agree with him or her about, and why you continue to support your position. Also please post a discussion question addressed to the class. Label this posting “rebuttal and question”
4. the second presenter responds with a 1 page rebuttal and question for the class.
5. students viewing the debate will submit an assignment, a paragraph response to debate 8.3, by a week after the debate is posted (Sun. 3/24).
6. After I look at students’ responses, I’ll send a summary to the class.
7. For the debate 8.3 classmate response assignment, presenters will submit a response to their experience doing the debate and my summary. This will be due after I send them the summary of the debate.

You could choose one of these statements as your topic to debate pro and con. You might not necessarily agree with the position you are debating. You could also come up with your own topic, but it should be a statement
relating to The Omnivore’s Dilemma pp. 134-184.
Choice 1. Synthetic fertilizers cause more harm than good by destroying the soil’s fertility (148).
Choice 2. While marketing tactics of Big Organic companies can be deceptive, they are still better than conventional food companies which also use deceptive marketing.
Choice 3. Industrial organic food production is better than conventional industrial food production when it comes to the environment, farmers, public health, and taxpayers, but it is still unsustainable (182-184).
You can also come up with your own topic related to these pages, but make sure it is a statement that you can debate for and against.
